Botox vs. Dysport vs. Xeomin
For those looking to improve visible fine lines and wrinkles a neuromodulator is the way to go. There are different brands such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, all neuromodulators and can help achieve your aesthetic goals!
What is a neuromodulator?
A neuromodulator is a protein that inhibits the signals sent between the facial nerve and muscle that make the muscle contract. When injected into the muscle, the connection between the two is blocked, restricting the muscle from moving. Constant use of facial expressions such as smiling or frowning can bring wrinkles to the forehead and around the eyes. With neuromodulators, we can smooth out or prevent wrinkles by reducing movement of facial muscles.
The neuromodulator in Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin is called Botulinum type A. FDA approved, and obtained from a purified source, neuromodulators a safe and effective way to remove or prevent unwanted signs of aging. The next step is to know which brand to go with!
Botox
Botox is the first and most known neuromodulator gaining its name from the main ingredient, Botulinum type A toxin. FDA approved in 2002, Botox has been used to treat a variety of skin concerns such as forehead wrinkles, and Crow’s feet. Additionally, Botox can be used to treat medical concerns such as migraines, excessive sweating, and eyelid spasms. Every body varies in the amount of Botox required to achieve desired results. Botox takes about 7 days to notice a difference, and results can last up to 6 months.
Dysport
Dysport is a brand popularly used in Europe since the late 90’s, and has been FDA approved in the United States since 2009. Also containing Botulinum Type A as the main ingredient, Dysport also includes other neuromodulators that makes it a great option for those looking to treat wrinkles and fine lines. Because Dysport contains a different formula from Botox, the dosage may differ. Most patients are found to require a greater amount of Dysport compared to Botox. This makes Dysport a great option for larger treatment areas such as the forehead. Dysport has been found to also be activated sooner than Botox. Results can last up to 4 for months or more.
Xeomin
Xeomin is the latest edition to the neuromodulator family. FDA approved in 2011, Xeomin contains Botulinum Type A, the same neuromodulator as Dysport and Botox. However, Xeomin does not hold any preservative compounds that these two other brands contain. For this reason, Xeomin is known as the “naked” neuromodulator and considered the purest injectable. This makes Xeomin a great option for those with sensitive skin. Xeomin is also known to activate faster than its competitors.
Which Neuromodulator should I go with?
All three brands contain the Botulinum toxin that will provide the same desired results. However, many individuals may react differently to the different brands and find they prefer one over the other. The main concern with taking the step towards getting a neuromodulator is the provider. An experienced neuromodulator provider will be able to assess how many units will be required, as well as the placement to reach your desired results.
